Portuguese star forward Cristiano Ronaldo saw one of his records shattered in European football on Wednesday when Greek club Olympiakos won the Europa Conference League.
Among his many records, Cristiano Ronaldo was previously the top goal scorer in the knockout stages of European tournaments. During his time with Real Madrid, the 39-year-old scored ten goals in their 2016-2017 campaign.
Karim Benzema also held a similar record while competing for the Champions League title with Real Madrid in 2022.
However, Ayoub El Kaabi has now claimed this honor. El Kaabi scored in the 116th minute, leading Olympiakos to a victory over Fiorentina and securing their first-ever European trophy.
This goal marked El Kaabi’s 11th in the knockout stages of a continental tournament, breaking Ronaldo’s record.
El Kaabi, a Moroccan player, has been impressive throughout the tournament, including a hat-trick against Aston Villa in the first leg of their semi-final and a brace in the return leg.
Despite this, Cristiano Ronaldo remains at the pinnacle of his career with the most UEFA Champions League goals and a total of 893 career goals.
Additionally, Ronaldo was named the top scorer in the recent Saudi Pro League, scoring twice against Al-Ittihad and bringing his tally to 64 goals in 69 appearances.
