Nobel Peace Prize 2024 Awarded to Japan’s Atomic Bomb Survivors

The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, an organization formed by survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. This group has worked tirelessly for nuclear disarmament, advocating for a world free of nuclear weapons. Through their personal stories and witness testimonies, the survivors—known as hibakusha—highlight the devastating effects of nuclear warfare, underscoring that such weapons should never be used again.

Founded in 1956, Nihon Hidankyo has been instrumental in raising global awareness of the horrific consequences of nuclear weapons. For nearly 70 years, the organization has collected testimonies from survivors and participated in global peace efforts, including United Nations delegations and peace conferences. Their message is clear: humanity and nuclear weapons cannot coexist.

The Nobel Committee praised the group for its advocacy and dedication to ensuring that the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are never repeated. With over 114,000 survivors still alive today, Nihon Hidankyo’s mission remains as crucial as ever, especially as nuclear tensions rise globally. Their efforts have contributed to maintaining a world where nuclear weapons have not been used in conflict for nearly 80 years.

The recognition of Nihon Hidankyo with the Nobel Peace Prize sends a powerful message to nations considering nuclear proliferation, reinforcing the need for disarmament and peace(
