Gaza now holds the grim record of having the highest number of child amputees per capita globally, as reported by the United Nations.
The crisis stems from over a year of intense conflict between Israel and Palestinian factions in the region.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, speaking through his deputy at a Cairo conference focused on boosting humanitarian aid to Gaza, described the situation as “appalling and apocalyptic.”
He highlighted the suffering of children, many of whom have lost limbs and undergone surgeries without anesthesia.
“The war has left Gaza with the highest per capita rate of child amputees in the world,” Guterres stated. “Children are undergoing limb amputations without even basic pain relief.”
