The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the Men’s ODI Team of the Year 2024 on Friday, featuring Pakistan’s pace duo of Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, along with emerging opener Saim Ayub. This year’s team includes players from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and the West Indies.
Sri Lankan all-rounder Charith Asalanka has been appointed as the captain of the team following a stellar year with both bat and ball. Asalanka scored 605 runs at an average of 50.2 and took ten wickets, making significant contributions throughout the year.
Pathum Nissanka, a top-order batter from Sri Lanka, also made the team after a remarkable double century against Afghanistan in February 2024. Nissanka accumulated 694 runs at an average of 63.1, including two centuries and two half-centuries, with an impressive strike rate of 106.4.
Kusal Mendis, another Sri Lankan player, scored the highest runs in ODIs during the year, amassing 742 runs at an average of 53, including one century and six half-centuries.
From Pakistan, rising star Saim Ayub earned his spot with 515 runs in just nine innings, showcasing consistency at the top of the order. Ayub also contributed with the ball, taking five wickets at an average of 27.80. He was named Player of the Series during Pakistan’s historic whitewash of South Africa.
Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf complete Pakistan’s representation in the team. Afridi claimed 15 wickets in six matches at an average of 17.60, while Rauf took 13 wickets in eight matches, playing a key role in Pakistan’s success with his pace and accuracy.
