ISLAMABAD: The federal government has announced a major relief for electricity consumers, with a planned reduction in power tariffs starting March 2025. Reports suggest that the government is expected to lower electricity prices by Rs2 per unit for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2024-25.
Power distribution companies have already submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to approve this reduction.
If accepted, the decision will provide relief worth over Rs52 billion to consumers. NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing on February 12, 2025, to discuss the petitions.
The revised electricity rates will apply for March, April, and May 2025. K-Electric consumers will also be included in the quarterly adjustments, but lifeline consumers will not benefit from this reduction.
Earlier, in December 2024, NEPRA had approved a ‘Winter Package’ with a rate of Rs26.07 per unit for three months. This package applied to industrial, commercial, and eligible domestic consumers. Additionally, NEPRA approved a negative adjustment of Rs1.14 per unit in Fuel Cost Adjustments (FCAs), refunding Rs11.379 billion to consumers for October 2024.
The expected tariff reduction in March 2025 aims to ease the financial burden on consumers amid rising inflation. The final decision will depend on NEPRA’s approval following the public hearing.
