Reports indicate that Islamabad’s police force has faced significant challenges in addressing crime complaints this year, leading to concerns about public safety and law enforcement effectiveness.
In October 2024, during a period of heightened security demands due to political protests and a high-profile diplomatic visit, more than 70% of the federal police were deployed for special duties. This left police stations understaffed, resulting in over 200 citizen complaints remaining unaddressed across the city’s 27 police stations. On October 5, cases were registered in only five stations, highlighting the strain on regular policing activities .
Despite official claims of a 31% reduction in crime rates in 2024 compared to the previous year, residents have expressed skepticism. Concerns have been raised about underreporting of crimes and a lack of accountability within the police force. Allegations include difficulties in registering First Information Reports (FIRs) without bribes or influential connections, and instances of police officers being involved in corrupt practices .
The judiciary has also voiced concerns. Chief Justice Amir Farooq of the Islamabad High Court criticized the police for their involvement with property mafias and their failure to maintain law and order, suggesting a systemic issue within the force .
To address these challenges, experts have recommended comprehensive reforms, including increasing the police force’s strength, providing better training and equipment, and reallocating resources from VIP protocols to public safety initiatives .
The situation underscores the urgent need for structural reforms within Islamabad’s police force to restore public trust and ensure effective law enforcement in the capital
