Kashmiri Muslims Pay the Price for New Delhi’s Failures
The aftermath of recent escalations in Kashmir has once again exposed the heavy cost borne by Kashmiri Muslims, as New Delhi’s long-standing policy failures fuel fresh unrest in the region. Following a deadly militant attack in Pahalgam that killed dozens, the Indian government responded with sweeping crackdowns — actions that have disproportionately affected the local Muslim population.

Security forces intensified operations across the Kashmir Valley, leading to mass arrests, home demolitions, and heightened surveillance. Many Kashmiri Muslims, already grappling with years of political disenfranchisement, report facing collective punishment for acts they had no part in. Students and workers from Kashmir across mainland India also face harassment and threats, fueling a climate of fear and marginalization.

Critics argue that New Delhi’s aggressive security-centric approach, coupled with its failure to address the political aspirations of Kashmiris after the 2019 revocation of Article 370, has only deepened alienation in the region. Instead of promoting peace and reconciliation, the government’s actions are seen as exacerbating tensions and further isolating Kashmir’s Muslim-majority community.

Observers warn that unless a meaningful political dialogue is initiated and human rights protections are restored, Kashmir will remain trapped in a cycle of violence and repression — a reality for which innocent civilians continue to pay the highest price.
