USA Basketball has named Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra as the new head coach of the U.S. men’s national basketball team through the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, succeeding Steve Kerr, who led the team to gold at the 2024 Paris Games. Spoelstra, 54, a two-time NBA champion with Miami in 2012 and 2013, was confirmed by USA Basketball’s board on October 14, 2025, pending US Olympic Committee approval. He previously served as Kerr’s assistant during the 2023 FIBA World Cup and 2024 Olympics. “It’s an incredible honor,” Spoelstra said, emphasizing the privilege of leading world-class athletes. He will guide the team through the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar and the 2028 Olympics. With a 787-572 record over 17 seasons, Spoelstra’s appointment has sparked excitement on X, with fans praising his tactical brilliance and leadership for continuing Team USA’s gold-medal legacy.
