Washington: US President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for Iran to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, giving Tehran more time amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the month-long war.
The extension, the second in recent days, comes as the Trump administration pushes for a negotiated settlement. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism that key objectives could be achieved “in weeks, not months,” even as Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites continue.
Iran has so far rejected parts of a reported US 15-point proposal and issued its own demands, including war reparations and recognition of its role in the region. Meanwhile, reports indicate that over 300 US service members have been wounded in related incidents, including an attack on a base in Saudi Arabia.
The conflict has already caused sharp rises in global oil prices and disrupted energy markets, with concerns growing over potential radiological risks if nuclear facilities are hit.
