Donald Trump Can Still Run for President in 2024 Despite Conviction
Legal experts confirm that former president Donald Trump remains eligible to run for president in 2024, even after his recent conviction in the hush money case. On Wednesday, the 77-year-old was found guilty on 34 charges of falsifying business records, making him the first former US president to run for the office as a felon.
According to the US Constitution, a presidential candidate must be at least 35 years old, a “natural born” citizen, and have resided in the US for at least 14 years. There are no restrictions preventing individuals with criminal records from running for president.
However, voter sentiment could significantly impact Trump’s campaign. A Bloomberg poll revealed that at least 53% of swing state voters would not vote for Trump if he were convicted. Additionally, a Quinnipiac University poll indicated that 6% of Trump’s supporters might reconsider their vote, which could be critical for his chances.
Despite his conviction, Trump will remain free until his sentencing, scheduled for July 11. He plans to appeal the conviction, and the lengthy appeal process could extend beyond the November election.
Trump’s campaign will undoubtedly face considerable challenges and uncertainties, but legally, he remains eligible to run for the presidency.
