A Delta Air Lines aircraft experienced an engine fire at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California, during its takeoff roll on January 10, 2023. The Boeing 757, operating as Flight 447 to Atlanta, was accelerating on the runway when passengers reported hearing a loud boom and seeing flames and black smoke emanating from the right engine.

The flight crew promptly aborted the takeoff and returned the aircraft to the gate. All 172 passengers were safely deplaned, and no injuries were reported. The aircraft was subsequently towed back to the gate for inspection.

Delta Air Lines issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience and confirmed that maintenance personnel would evaluate the aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident to determine the cause of the engine fire.
