reports that the European Union has condemned Hamas’s refusal to extend the initial phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and criticized Israel’s subsequent blockade of humanitarian aid to the region. EU foreign affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni emphasized the urgency of resuming negotiations, aiming for a permanent ceasefire that would secure the release of remaining Israeli hostages and support recovery and reconstruction efforts in Gaza. The EU also reiterated its demand for unrestricted humanitarian access to Palestinians and urged Israel to allow aid workers and international organizations to operate safely and effectively in the region.
In a related development, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell condemned remarks by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who threatened to cut off fuel and humanitarian aid to Gaza. Borrell described these statements as “incitement to war crimes” and suggested that the EU consider sanctions in response. He called on the Israeli government to distance itself from such rhetoric and engage in good faith negotiations for an immediate ceasefire, facilitated by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt.
The situation remains tense as international mediators continue their efforts to broker a lasting peace and address the critical humanitarian needs in Gaza.
