Large-Scale Extinguishing Operation Underway at Margalla Hills Trails
ISLAMABAD: A significant fire that began in Islamabad’s Margalla Hills forest range a day ago has prompted a large-scale extinguishing operation in the federal capital on Tuesday.
According to the Capital Development Authority (CDA), a substantial number of firefighting teams have been mobilized for prevention and extinguishing efforts across the Margalla range. The fire has been contained at Trail 3, with efforts ongoing to control it at Trail 5.
A spokesperson for the CDA stated that more than 65 firefighters are currently involved in the operation. The Director-General of Environment is overseeing the operation, with additional teams dispatched to the affected areas. Firefighters are facing challenges due to high temperatures and windy conditions.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the fire and directed authorities to swiftly mobilize and commence operations to contain it. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of human lives.
Radio Pakistan reported that six aviation squadrons and helicopters from the Pakistan Army have also been deployed to assist in the firefighting operation.
While the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has cautioned the public to exercise caution as both natural and human factors can potentially ignite forest fires.
Forest fires are common during the summer season, often exacerbated by rising temperatures.
