Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has re-emerged as a key figure advocating for diplomatic de-escalation amid the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. Following India’s “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, which targeted sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, resulting in significant casualties, Nawaz Sharif met with his brother, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in Islamabad to discuss the crisis.

Nawaz Sharif, leading the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is urging the government to employ all available diplomatic channels to restore peace between the two nuclear-armed nations. He has emphasized the importance of avoiding aggressive postures and has not publicly condemned the Pahalgam terror attack, which India attributes to Pakistan.

In line with this diplomatic approach, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has offered to participate in a neutral and transparent investigation into the Pahalgam incident, aiming to reduce hostilities.

Nawaz Sharif’s return to the political forefront is seen as an attempt to steer Pakistan towards a more measured response, leveraging his experience in managing past crises, such as the 1999 Kargil conflict. His involvement is viewed as a stabilizing factor amid the current volatile situation.
