No US defence for non-paying Nato members: Trump

Donald Trump has reiterated his stance that the United States will not automatically defend NATO allies who fail to meet the alliance’s defense spending target of 2% of their GDP. This position aligns with his longstanding criticism of NATO members not contributing their fair share to collective defense.

Trump’s comments have raised concerns about the U.S.’s commitment to NATO’s principle of collective defense, enshrined in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which considers an attack against one member as an attack against all. Article 5 has been invoked only once, following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has emphasized that any suggestion of allies not defending each other undermines the security of all member nations, including the U.S., and increases risks to both American and European soldiers. As of the end of 2024, NATO estimates indicate that 23 of its 32 members have met the 2% defense spending target.

Trump’s stance reflects his broader “America First” foreign policy approach, which includes reassessing U.S. commitments to international organizations and alliances. During his 2024 presidential campaign, he vowed to “fundamentally reevaluate” NATO’s purpose and mission, questioning the value of alliances and suggesting that allies have taken advantage of the U.S.

Critics argue that this approach could weaken NATO’s unity and embolden adversarial nations. They caution that undermining the principle of collective defense may destabilize the alliance and compromise global security.

The international community continues to monitor these developments, recognizing the potential implications for NATO’s future and the broader geopolitical landscape.
