​Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, due to a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure, as confirmed by the Vatican. He died at 7:35 a.m. local time in his residence at the Domus Sanctae Marthae in Vatican City. ​

The Vatican released his death certificate, which detailed the cause of death as a cerebral stroke, coma, and irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse. ​

In accordance with his wishes, Pope Francis will be buried in a simple tomb at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. ​

His passing has prompted a period of mourning and the initiation of preparations for the conclave to elect his successor
