Protests in India over a new law governing Muslim land endowments, known as waqf properties, have escalated into violence, resulting in at least three deaths and numerous injuries. The unrest began in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, where demonstrators set fire to shopping malls, attacked a Hindu residence, and clashed with police. Authorities have since suspended internet services in the area to control the situation .
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, recently passed by India’s Parliament, proposes significant changes to the management of waqf properties. Critics argue that the bill undermines Muslim autonomy over religious assets by introducing non-Muslim members into waqf boards and increasing governmental oversight. Supporters contend that the reforms aim to reduce corruption and improve transparency .
In response to the violence, Indian authorities have arrested over 100 individuals and deployed additional security forces to restore order .
