Russian President Vladimir Putin has called on Ukrainian forces operating in Russia’s western Kursk region to surrender, assuring them of safety and dignified treatment if they comply. This appeal follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s request to avoid a “horrible massacre” in the area.
The situation in Kursk has been tense since August 2024, when Ukrainian forces launched an offensive into the region. Initially, Ukraine gained significant ground but has faced setbacks in recent months. Russia is now reportedly on the verge of retaking the territory.
President Trump has proposed a 30-day ceasefire to de-escalate the conflict. While President Putin has agreed in principle, he insists that any ceasefire must address key issues, including the status of the Kursk region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged the challenges in Kursk but has not indicated any plans to order a surrender. He continues to call for increased international pressure on Russia to achieve a peaceful resolution.
The international community remains engaged, with leaders from various countries participating in discussions to support U.S. efforts in brokering a ceasefire. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, among others, has reiterated support for Ukraine, condemning Russia’s actions and emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution.
