Tensions between Algeria and France have escalated following Algeria’s expulsion of 12 French officials. The Algerian Foreign Ministry cited France’s arrest of an Algerian consular official as the primary reason, accusing France of violating diplomatic protocols. The official was among three Algerians arrested in connection with the 2024 kidnapping of Amir Boukhors, a France-based critic of the Algerian government .
In response, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called on Algerian authorities to reverse the expulsion decision, stating that the officials have no connection to the legal proceedings. He warned of immediate reciprocal actions if the expulsions proceed .
This diplomatic dispute adds to a series of tensions between the two nations, including disagreements over France’s support for Morocco’s stance on Western Sahara and the arrest of French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal in 2024
