Turkey Strikes PKK Targets in Iraq and Syria Following Ankara Terror Attack

In response to a deadly suicide bombing in Ankara on October 1, 2024, Turkey launched extensive airstrikes against PKK militant positions in northern Iraq and Syria. The assault targeted caves, shelters, and depots used by the PKK, a group designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and the EU. The air raids resulted in the destruction of over 30 locations. This offensive came after a branch of the PKK claimed responsibility for the Ankara attack, which left two police officers injured. The Turkish government aims to protect its borders and prevent future terrorist acts. Turkish authorities also detained nearly 1,000 suspects with alleged PKK links as part of a nationwide crackdown. The military’s actions underscore the ongoing conflict between Turkey and the PKK, a struggle that has spanned decades, resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of lives.

Turkey’s actions reflect its commitment to eliminating PKK threats, which have long destabilized the region. Ankara’s leadership emphasized the necessity of the strikes to secure national safety and deter further aggression
