Pakistan is on the verge of implementing a comprehensive policy to standardize ‘green projects’ across the nation. The forthcoming Green Building Code of Pakistan 2023 (GBCP-2023) aims to establish eco-friendly practices throughout the design, construction, and operation phases of buildings. Key focus areas of the GBCP-2023 include:

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Use: Promoting designs and technologies that reduce energy consumption and integrate renewable energy sources.

Water Efficiency: Implementing strategies to conserve water resources within building operations.

Environmentally Friendly Building Materials: Encouraging the use of sustainable and non-toxic materials in construction.

Waste and Toxic Reduction: Establishing protocols to minimize waste generation and manage hazardous substances responsibly.

Smart and Sustainable Growth: Advocating for development practices that balance urban expansion with environmental preservation.

Enhancement of Air Quality: Implementing measures to improve indoor and outdoor air quality associated with building projects.

This policy aligns with Pakistan’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and green growth. The government has been actively reorienting its development trajectory towards green growth to protect social values and public interests. Initiatives such as the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami Programme and the promotion of electric vehicles underscore this commitment.

The introduction of uniform standards for green projects is expected to provide clear guidelines for sustainable development, encouraging eco-friendly practices and ensuring the responsible use of resources.
