PM Shehbaz reviews monsoon preparedness with NDMA chief

Islamabad, July 13: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting with the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to review the country’s preparedness for the ongoing monsoon season, emphasizing the need for swift coordination to protect lives and infrastructure.

During the briefing, NDMA officials presented an overview of weather forecasts, flood-risk assessments, emergency response plans, and the availability of rescue equipment across vulnerable regions. The prime minister was informed that provincial authorities and disaster response agencies have been placed on alert to respond promptly to any weather-related emergencies.

Prime Minister Shehbaz directed all federal and provincial institutions to strengthen coordination and ensure that relief supplies, rescue teams, and medical services remain ready for immediate deployment. He stressed that protecting citizens, particularly those living in flood-prone areas, must remain the government’s top priority.

The NDMA chief also outlined measures taken to improve early warning systems, monitor river levels, and coordinate with the Pakistan Meteorological Department for timely weather updates. Authorities said public awareness campaigns are being intensified to encourage residents to follow official advisories during periods of heavy rainfall.

Officials discussed contingency plans for urban flooding, landslides, and possible disruptions to transportation and electricity networks. The prime minister instructed relevant departments to maintain close communication with local administrations to ensure rapid evacuation and relief operations where necessary.

As monsoon rains continue across parts of the country, the government reaffirmed its commitment to minimizing the impact of natural disasters through effective planning, inter-agency coordination, and timely emergency response.
