The Lahore High Court (LHC) has summoned Lahore Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Operations Faisal Kamran to explain the actions of police officers who allegedly shaved the heads of individuals caught flying kites and subsequently uploaded videos of the incidents on social media. The court expressed concern over the police’s behavior, emphasizing that such actions are not only inappropriate but also violate individuals’ dignity and privacy rights.
The controversy stems from the enforcement of the Punjab Prohibition of Kite Flying (Amendment) Act, 2024, which imposes severe penalties for kite flying, including imprisonment and fines. The law was enacted following several fatal accidents caused by the use of sharp kite strings.
The LHC has directed DIG Kamran to provide an explanation for the police officers’ conduct and has ordered Punjab Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar to submit a report on the matter.
