Dilapidated Pindi-Muree highway disrupts citizens’ lives

The deteriorating state of the Rawalpindi-Murree Road has significantly disrupted daily life for residents, tourists, and commuters. Despite the allocation of one billion rupees by the Punjab government for its reconstruction, the project remains incomplete. The stretch between Chitta Mor and Bansara Gali is particularly affected, with ongoing excavation work leading to persistent dust, frequent vehicle breakdowns, and an increased risk of accidents. These conditions have also contributed to respiratory issues among the local population.

The situation is exacerbated by the poor condition of alternative routes. In Rawalpindi’s Saddar area, roads such as Haider Road, Adamjee Road, and Kashmir Road are riddled with potholes and have not been adequately repaired following underground utility installations. This neglect has resulted in severe traffic congestion, vehicle damage, and reluctance among taxi drivers to service these areas.

Compounding the issue, the closure of The Mall for underpass construction has diverted traffic onto these already compromised roads. Although the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board initiated some renovation efforts, only a 1.5 km section of Bank Road has been addressed, leaving other critical stretches in disrepair.
Residents and commuters are calling for immediate action to rehabilitate the Rawalpindi-Murree Road and its alternative routes. The current state of these roads not only hampers daily activities but also poses significant health and safety risks. Timely and comprehensive infrastructure improvements are essential to restore normalcy and ensure the well-being of the affected communities.
