Historic Milestone: Pakistan’s Nayyab Ali Becomes First Transgender Woman Shortlisted for UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders

In a groundbreaking achievement, Nayyab Ali, Pakistan’s pioneering transgender human rights activist, has been shortlisted by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the role of Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders—the first transgender woman ever nominated for such a senior UN position. Announced on October 15, 2025, this recognition celebrates Ali’s decade-long advocacy for transgender rights, including her key role in drafting Pakistan’s landmark Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2018.
As Executive Director of Transgender Rights Consultants Pakistan and a Harvard Carr Center Global Fellow, Ali has earned seven international honors, such as the 2020 Franco-German Prize for Human Rights. Speaking to APP, she emphasized the UN’s commitment to universality: “If appointed, I aim to bolster protections for gender-diverse defenders facing global violence.”
A Special Consultative Group from Malawi, South Korea, North Macedonia, Guatemala, and Türkiye will now review candidates for recommendation at the UNHRC’s 61st Session. Hailed as a triumph for transgender visibility, the shortlisting has sparked widespread praise on social media, underscoring Pakistan’s growing global human rights footprint amid ongoing inclusion challenges.
