Beijing, July 29: China has strongly condemned the United States’ decision to impose sanctions on several Chinese research institutions, describing the measures as unjustified and urging Washington to reverse what it called politically motivated restrictions.
In a statement, China’s Foreign Ministry criticized the sanctions, arguing that they undermine normal scientific and technological cooperation while harming the interests of both countries. Beijing said the targeted institutions operate in accordance with Chinese law and rejected allegations used to justify the measures.
The U.S. government announced the sanctions as part of broader efforts to address national security concerns and limit access to technologies it considers sensitive. American officials have maintained that the restrictions are intended to prevent the transfer of technologies with potential military or strategic applications.
China, however, accused Washington of expanding the concept of national security to suppress Chinese technological development and limit fair competition. Officials warned that such actions could disrupt global research collaboration and further strain bilateral relations.
The latest dispute comes amid continuing tensions between the world’s two largest economies over trade, advanced technology, export controls, and geopolitical competition. Both governments have exchanged a series of restrictions in recent years affecting companies, research organizations, and technology-related industries.
Analysts say the sanctions are likely to add another layer of complexity to already fragile U.S.-China relations, particularly in sectors involving artificial intelligence, semiconductors, biotechnology, and advanced scientific research.
Despite ongoing disagreements, Beijing reiterated its call for dialogue and mutual respect, urging the United States to resolve differences through constructive engagement rather than unilateral measures. The U.S. administration has not indicated any plans to reconsider the latest sanctions.
