Marseille Stuns PSG with 1-0 Victory in Storm-Delayed Clash

By TV84.pk Sports Desk | September 23, 2025
MARSEILLE – A fifth-minute header by Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd handed Marseille a rare 1-0 triumph over reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Monday at the Velodrome, ending a 14-year drought for a home league win against their arch-rivals. The match, the biggest in French football, was postponed by 24 hours due to storms in southern France, adding drama to an already intense fixture.
Early Strike Secures Historic Win
Aguerd, a recent signing from West Ham United, capitalized on a PSG defensive lapse when goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier misjudged a deflected Mason Greenwood cross, leaving the net unguarded. Aguerd’s header—his second goal in two Ligue 1 games—proved decisive. Marseille nearly doubled their lead when Amine Gouiri struck the crossbar, and a first-half goal was disallowed for offside.
Despite PSG’s attacking talent, including Achraf Hakimi deployed on the wing, the visitors struggled without key players Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, and Joao Neves, all sidelined by injuries. Dembele’s absence was notable, as he attended the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris, where several PSG players were nominated.
Defensive Resilience and Late Drama
Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli made crucial saves to thwart PSG’s second-half push, securing a clean sheet. The match wasn’t without controversy, as Marseille’s fiery coach Roberto De Zerbi received a late red card for his touchline antics. The victory, Marseille’s first home league win over PSG since November 2011, also marked the first time they’ve scored against PSG at home in Ligue 1 since 2017.
Ligue 1 Standings Shake-Up
PSG’s first loss of the season drops them from the top of Ligue 1, with Monaco taking the lead on goals scored. Both teams, along with Lyon and Strasbourg, sit on 12 points, while Marseille climbs to sixth, three points behind the leading pack.
The storm-delayed “Classique” showcased Marseille’s grit and Aguerd’s growing influence, setting the stage for a thrilling Ligue 1 race. Stay tuned to TV84.pk for more football updates.
