RIO DE JANEIRO – Tens of thousands of Brazilians flooded the streets on Sunday in a nationwide outcry against lawmakers pushing an amnesty bill that could exonerate former President Jair Bolsonaro and shield corrupt politicians from prosecution. The protests, dubbed a rejection of “shameless” Congress, mark the largest left-wing mobilization since President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s narrow 2022 reelection.
Outrage Over Amnesty and “Banditry Bill”
Bolsonaro, a far-right firebrand, was sentenced last week to 27 years for orchestrating a coup plot to prevent Lula’s inauguration—a scheme thwarted only by military resistance. In response, Brazil’s conservative-dominated Congress fast-tracked an amnesty bill potentially pardoning Bolsonaro and 700 supporters convicted for storming government buildings in January 2023.
Protesters decried the move as impunity, chanting “No amnesty” in cities nationwide while brandishing signs reading “Shameless Congress.” Fury also targeted the so-called “Banditry Bill,” passed this week, which mandates secret congressional ballots to approve charges or arrests against its members—a measure critics say enables corruption.
President Lula hailed the demonstrations on Instagram: “I stand with the Brazilian people. Today’s protests show that the population does not want impunity or amnesty.”
Musical Resistance on Copacabana Beach
In Rio de Janeiro, a sweltering “musical protest” drew tens of thousands to iconic Copacabana Beach. Psychology student Giovana Araujo, 27, told AFP, “This protection they seek is to camouflage corruption and impunity.” The event featured Brazilian music legends—octogenarians Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Chico Buarque—performing dictatorship-era resistance anthems from a truck-stage amid swaying palm trees.
Crowds belted along as an inflatable Bolsonaro doll in prison stripes bobbed beside one of U.S. President Donald Trump, whose retaliatory tariffs on Brazil stem from his ally’s prosecution. Veloso, 83, declared, “Musicians could not fail to respond to the horrors creeping in around us.” Sociology student Yasmin Aimee Coelho Pessoa, 20, called the icons’ presence “revolutionary,” adding, “Once again, artists are mobilizing the people to demand justice.”
Sao Paulo’s Giant Flag of Defiance
In Sao Paulo, the economic powerhouse, demonstrators unfurled a massive Brazilian flag in a direct rebuke to a U.S. flag waved at a recent pro-Bolsonaro rally. The University of Sao Paulo’s Political Debate Monitor estimated 42,000 attendees—mirroring Rio’s turnout—the biggest for the left since Lula’s victory.
Lula’s slim win ignited ongoing political turmoil, including Bolsonaro’s failed coup, which judges said lacked elite military backing. The amnesty push now threatens to pardon those January 2023 rioters, echoing the U.S. Capitol storming.
Echoes of Dictatorship and Global Ties
The protests evoke Brazil’s dark history of military rule, with artists’ involvement symbolizing enduring resistance. As Trump escalates trade wars over Bolsonaro’s fate, the demonstrations underscore Brazil’s polarized divide, with calls for accountability clashing against congressional self-preservation.
With Congress poised to vote on amnesty, Sunday’s fervor signals deepening public resolve against elite impunity. Stay tuned to TV84.pk for updates on Brazil’s political storm.
