PSX tumbles 1,340 points as global sell-off, oil surge hit sentiment

Karachi, July 29: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) suffered a sharp decline, with the benchmark index plunging 1,340 points, as investors reacted to a broad global market sell-off and rising international oil prices that dampened market sentiment.

Heavy selling was witnessed across key sectors, including banking, energy, cement, and manufacturing, as investors moved to reduce risk amid growing uncertainty in global financial markets. Traders said concerns over higher energy costs and weaker international market performance triggered widespread profit-taking.

The surge in global crude oil prices added to investor anxiety, raising fears that higher import costs could increase inflationary pressures and widen Pakistan’s external financing challenges. Analysts noted that rising oil prices are particularly significant for Pakistan, which relies heavily on imported petroleum products.

Market participants also pointed to cautious investor sentiment ahead of key economic developments, with uncertainty surrounding inflation, monetary policy, and the country’s broader economic outlook contributing to the sell-off.

Despite the sharp decline, financial experts said the market’s long-term direction will depend on domestic economic indicators, corporate earnings, and global commodity price movements. They added that short-term volatility is likely to persist as investors closely monitor international developments.

The PSX has experienced heightened fluctuations in recent weeks amid changing global market conditions, geopolitical tensions, and shifting investor expectations regarding interest rates and economic growth.

Analysts advised investors to remain focused on market fundamentals, noting that periods of heightened volatility are common during times of global uncertainty and rapidly changing commodity prices.
