PIA buyers get Rs14.2b properties

Islamabad, July 13: Prospective buyers participating in the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will receive ownership of assets valued at approximately Rs14.2 billion as part of the transaction, according to officials overseeing the privatization process.

The assets primarily comprise selected land, buildings, and operational properties that have been included in the sale package to enhance the airline’s commercial appeal. Officials said the move is intended to attract competitive bids while ensuring that the transfer aligns with the government’s broader privatization framework.

The Privatization Commission has been working to restructure PIA’s financial and operational profile ahead of the sale, separating certain liabilities and non-core assets to make the national carrier more attractive to investors. Authorities believe the revised package will encourage greater participation from domestic and international bidders.

Government representatives reiterated that the privatization aims to improve the airline’s financial sustainability, modernize its operations, and reduce the fiscal burden on the national exchequer. They emphasized that the process is being conducted in accordance with established legal and regulatory procedures.

Economic analysts say the inclusion of valuable properties could strengthen investor interest but stress that long-term success will ultimately depend on the airline’s operational performance, governance reforms, and commercial strategy. They note that restoring profitability will require sustained investment and efficient management beyond the initial acquisition.

The government expects the privatization process to move forward in the coming months, with officials expressing optimism that the transaction will mark a significant step toward revitalizing Pakistan’s aviation sector and improving the performance of the country’s national flag carrier.
