MUZAFFARABAD: Democracy took center stage across Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on Monday as the first phase of local government elections commenced, with more than 1.4 million registered voters casting their ballots to elect representatives for grassroots institutions.
Polling stations opened early under tight security arrangements, with voters arriving in large numbers despite the early morning hours. Men and women queued patiently outside polling stations, reflecting strong public enthusiasm and a commitment to strengthening local governance.
Election authorities confirmed that comprehensive measures had been put in place to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and orderly voting process. Security personnel were deployed at sensitive polling stations, while election staff monitored proceedings to facilitate smooth polling.
The first phase of the elections covers multiple districts across the region, where voters are choosing representatives for union councils and other local bodies. Officials expressed confidence that the electoral process would conclude without major disruptions.
Political parties and independent candidates have remained active throughout the campaign, focusing on issues such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, employment, and public services. Analysts believe the outcome of the elections will play a significant role in shaping local governance and development priorities in AJK.
Polling will continue until the scheduled closing time, after which vote counting will begin. Preliminary results are expected later in the day, while official results will be announced by the election authorities following the completion of the counting process.
The elections are widely seen as an important democratic exercise, offering citizens an opportunity to influence decision-making at the grassroots level and strengthen local institutions across Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
