Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have reached a boiling point following deadly cross-border clashes that killed dozens on both sides. Pakistan’s military has issued a stark warning: “We will not tolerate the treacherous use of Afghan soil for terrorism against Pakistan,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) declared after repelling what it called an “unprovoked” Taliban assault on October 11-12, 2025. The skirmishes in Kunar and Kurram districts resulted in 23 Pakistani troops martyred and over 200 Taliban fighters killed, according to ISPR, while the Taliban claimed 58 Pakistani deaths in retaliation for alleged Pakistani airstrikes on Kabul.
Islamabad accuses the Afghan Taliban of harboring the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), fueling a surge in attacks that claimed over 500 lives in Pakistan this year. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif labeled Afghanistan Pakistan’s “number one enemy,” vowing consequences for cross-border militancy. Border crossings like Torkham remain closed for a second day, stoking fears of wider conflict. Analysts warn of reprisals and shifting alliances, with Kabul cozying up to India. Despite calls for diplomacy from Qatar and Saudi Arabia, experts predict simmering hostilities could spiral into full-scale war, reshaping South Asian security.
