A tax system based on extortion.

Islamabad, July 13: Growing criticism of the country’s taxation framework has intensified after business leaders described the existing system as being “based on extortion,” arguing that excessive enforcement measures and inconsistent policies are discouraging investment and undermining economic confidence.

Representatives from various trade and industry associations said businesses are facing mounting pressure from frequent audits, complex compliance requirements, and what they describe as arbitrary tax demands. They contend that such practices have increased the cost of doing business and created uncertainty for both local entrepreneurs and foreign investors.

Business leaders urged the government to introduce comprehensive tax reforms focused on transparency, fairness, and predictability. They emphasized that broadening the tax base, simplifying regulations, and ensuring equal treatment of taxpayers would encourage greater voluntary compliance and strengthen revenue collection without placing undue pressure on legitimate businesses.

Economic experts noted that an effective tax system should balance revenue generation with economic growth. They argued that a transparent and efficient framework can improve investor confidence, expand formal economic activity, and reduce opportunities for tax evasion.

Government officials, meanwhile, have defended ongoing efforts to strengthen tax administration, stating that reforms are aimed at increasing compliance and improving public revenues needed for national development. They maintain that measures are being taken to modernize the taxation system while addressing concerns raised by the business community.

As discussions over fiscal reforms continue, economists believe meaningful dialogue between policymakers and the private sector will be essential to building a tax system that promotes both economic growth and sustainable public finances.
